Living in a Mess

Today’s devotional is from this passage in the Naptime Diaries Advent Journal:

“It’s Jesus’ greatest desire to be with us in the mess of our kitchen floors and the mess of our souls. How do I know? Fast forward to nine months after the Annunciation to Mary in the midst of the Nativity scene, surrounded by livestock, hay and dirt. I know she was welcoming the Lord into the mess, trusting in His promises of love and mercy.” Amen.

Oh man, do I dislike ‘mess’. All my friends who know me well will know how I despise clutter, mess, disorder in my life. But having Jesus in my life has helped me in that respect. The fact that being ‘orderly’, ‘clean’, ‘neat’ is my effort in controlling my own life and creating a facade for others. With Jesus in my life, I can trust that He has it under control and that He is with me, messy or not. That He is my priority. Not the mess.

Today’s dancer pose reminds me that I can ‘dance’ in my mess sometimes. While I’m dancing, might as well throw some of the clutter around and have a bit of fun, seeing Jesus is dancing with me anyways.

P.S. I burnt my OCD away during the burning and oil ceremony at my Holy Yoga Retreat. And I’m so glad I did.

How do you manage ‘mess’? This can be physical mess around you, emotional mess or spiritual mess? What do you turn to? Share in the comments below!
